This is a typical indigo dye cotton popular in the 1950's and 60's in the rural areas of China. Cotton was first used for textiles in the 12th century in the Lower Yangtze valley. By the 16th century much of the population was wearing cotton clothing. Compared to the production of silk, cotton was far easier and cheaper to make.

Because indigo dyed cotton was the standard "fashion" of the rural classes, Mao Zedong chose it to be the standard outfit for the masses. The stencils and decorative elements were used for quilts, festive wear and children's clothing. There are many variations of stencils ranging from birds and butterflies to all sorts of flower patterns.

Dragonfish and lions design - prototype pattern for my bag by Burri.

Prototype: Dragonfish and Lions - Chinese design pattern

This is the first ever MyBag! by mybagbyburri. 12 bags with pouch were made, unlabeled. (Note: The colors do not correspond to the real textile.)

The pattern is based on an old Chinese textile from a robe dating from the Liao Dynasty (907-1125), which is protected and, on very rare occasions, exhibited in the textile museum Abbegg Stiftung, Riggisberg, Switzerland. Sold Out!

Peacocks and Peonies - Chinese design pattern

A motif popular in rural China in the 1950's and onwards. Machine-made cotton was cheaper and smoother than hand-made, but the periodic political crises often led to a decline in quality. Once Deng Xiaoping became China's leader, modernisation began. Machinery was improved and rationing of textiles, among other things, was no more.
